The High Dam

The biggest change on the Nile in all its history was the building of the High Dam South of Aswan. A huge water reservoir aiming to protect Egypt from the floods and provide the country electricity.
It took ten years to build it and was completed in 1970 to replace the old Aswan dam built in 1902.
The Dam is 114 meters high and 3.6 kilometers long.
Upstream, it creates a reservoir of water, called Lake Nasser,Before the reservoir was made, the land was the home of 100,000 farming people known as the Nubians who had to be given new houses and lands as a compensation for the loss of their properties.
